The word mask does not tell you where a product belongs. A texture you rinse off and a final layer you leave on cannot occupy the same step. Start with the directions on your particular product, then fit it into the routine you already use.
A mask is optional. You do not need to add several products just to make a routine feel complete.
Keep your usual routine easy to follow
The American Academy of Dermatology describes a simple order: cleanse, apply medication or treatment as directed, then moisturizer or sunscreen, followed by makeup if wanted. It also notes that using too many products can irritate skin. AAD guidance on product order.
That guidance is a starting point for ordinary skincare, not a universal mask schedule. It does not tell you to put every mask before every serum. A two-step packet, a rinse-off formula and a sleeping mask can have different directions. If you use a prescribed treatment, check with your clinician before adding a mask over it.
If the mask is rinsed away
Plan the mask while you still have access to the sink. Follow its instructions for preparation, amount and removal, then continue with the rest of your routine. There is no reason to apply the products you intend to leave on underneath a formula that tells you to rinse everything away.
Beauty of Joseon's Ground Rice and Honey Glow Mask specifies clean, dry skin, a 15 to 20 minute application, and rinsing with lukewarm water. The brand's instructions apply to that formula. Compare them with the directions on your own jar rather than borrowing the time for another wash-off mask.

If it comes as a sheet or gel mask
Read the packet before arranging your other products. Some packs include a separate first step. Check the recommended wear time and what the maker asks you to do after removal. Keep that packet beside you the first time you use it; the product name is not a substitute for the directions.
Our sheet, ampoule and wrapping mask article explains the differences. You can also inspect the CNP two-step mask before choosing it for your routine.
If it is a sleeping mask
Use the leave-on instructions for the specific sleeping mask. Do not extend another mask's wear time to turn it into one. Read our sleeping mask guide for the format overview and check each product for its own application directions.
Make a routine you can repeat
Decide which products you already have before adding more. In Ritual Guide, you can choose products at each step or keep what you already use. Use the builder to organize your choices; it does not replace a product's directions or individual medical advice.
Choose one mask that fits the time and application you prefer. A shorter, manageable routine is a reasonable choice too.
